PetTech Pet CPR and First Aid

We can’t teach an entire PetTech class in a blog. We just wanted to give you a picture of what Pet CPR and First Aid includes. There are steps you may not think of especially in the middle of an emergency. There are best practices that you can include to give your pet the best opportunity for survival.

Pet CPR
 
Step 1 : Stop, Breathe, Assess the Scene, if safe…
 
Step 2 : Approach pet from behind, stomp and shout, if there is no response, shout for help and…
 
Step 3 : Assess breathing for 5-10 seconds, if not breathing normally…
 
Step 4 : Begin 30 compressions and 2 breaths, repeat every 2 minutes. . .
 
Step 5 : Assess pulse and breathing. If no change, continue and reassess every 2 minutes. . .
 
Step 6 : Continue until breathing, then transport to the vet
 
 
Pet Choking
 
Step 1 : Stop, Breathe, Assess the Scene, if safe…
 
Step 2 : Approach from behind, stomp and shout, if there is no response, shout for help and…
 
Step 3 : If conscious pet cannot cough and is not breathing…
 
Step 4 : Begin chest thrusts until the object comes up or the pet goes down. . .
 
Step 5 : If pet goes down, check airway for object, remove and attempt 2 breaths. Begin CPR, if the pet does not begin to cough or breathe. . .
 
Step 6 : Continue until breathing, then transport to the vet.
