February is National Heart Month!

What a great topic to start a blog for a CPR and First Aid training company!

The heart is one of the most important parts of a human body.  Training and learning are key to keeping the heart healthy and to saving someone’s life.  We have learned that the number one killer of women is heart related problems – heart disease, heart attacks, etc.  These statistics are far greater than all forms of cancer combined.  Learning how to keep cholesterol down, exercise, and care for ourselves is extremely important.  Doctors tell us that all the time.  But learning the signs and symptoms of a heart attack are just as important.  Keep in mind, even people we consider very healthy or not at risk can still have a heart attack.  It can happen to anyone.  Here are some of the many symptoms:

  • pain, tightness or pressure in the chest
  • pain, numbness or tingling down one or both arms
  • difficulty breathing
  • change in color, especially a gray or ashen color
  • sweating
  • fatigue
  • nausea or vomiting
  • sensation of heartburn
  • jaw pain
  • pain between the shoulder blades
  • denial

Unfortunately, there are many possible symptoms, many of which can be easily attributed to something else, like the flu, busy lifestyle, “overdoing it,” etc.  That makes it hard to be sure that someone is having a major problem like a heart attack.  The best advice is to get checked out.  If you are the one witnessing symptoms like these, don’t wait, call 911.  Especially, if you have a “funny feeling” about it.

While you are waiting for the paramedics to arrive, keep the person comfortable, loosen clothing, and keep your eye on them.  Sometimes the heart attack will take a turn for the worse.  If they become unconscious and stop breathing, you will need to start CPR.  Staying Alive LLC can help you to learn just what to do in that case.  If you have never taken a course or  have not had a refresher in a while, contact us to schedule a class.  While learning to prevent a problem is always the best medicine, CPR and AED training can save someone’s life.

You, too, can be a guardian angel!
